Managing Internetworks

with SNMP and RMON

This one-day tutorial extends the study of the TCP/IP protocol suite with a detailed discussion into network management and the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). We will begin with an overview of the challenge of internetwork management, and consider popular network management architectures from Cabletron Systems, Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, and Tivoli. From that basis, we will study the three components of the Internet Network Management Framework: the Structure of Management Information (SMI), Management Information Bases (MIBs), and the SNMP, plus an overview of the SNMPv2 and SNMPv3 enhancements. In addition, these protocols will be studied using the Network General  Snifferâ Protocol Analyzer.

Tutorial Outline

Internetwork Management Standards: IEEE, OSI, DMTF and the Internet
The Next Generation: Web-Based Network Management
Network Management Implementations: Cabletron’s SPECTRUM, HP’s OpenView, Sun Microsystems’ Solstice Domain Manager, and Tivoli TME NetView.
The Structure of Management Information (SMI)
Management Information Bases (MIBs): MIB-II, the RMON and RMON2 MIBs, device-specific MIBs and private enterprise MIBs
Broadband MIBs and Customer Network Management
The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
Enhancements with SNMP version 2 and SNMP version 3
Underlying Transport Protocols: UDP, IP, and ARP
Implementing SNMP: Case studies from real networks

Who Should Attend

Network designers and administrators needing an in-depth knowledge of SNMP and its application for managing complex, multi-vendor internetworks.

Course Materials

Each student will receive a copy of Managing Internetworks with SNMP, 3rd edition, by Mark A. Miller, P.E. and published by IDG Books Worldwide, Inc., plus copies of the SNMPv1, SNMPv2, SNMPv3, RMON MIB and RMON2 MIB Protocol Reference Guides.
